Laboratory diagnostics are an important part of the clinical process. In order to treat diseases effectively, it is necessary to have good diagnostic tools, usually defined as ones that are highly sensitive, highly specific, fast, and cheap. The advent of powerful microarray technology holds promise for improved diagnostic tools. The potential use of microarray technology for diagnosis of bacterial infection is examined with special attention to the role of bioinformatics tools.
